The In and Out Birkin was a limited edition introduced under Véronique Nichanian’s men’s collection direction for Fall/Winter 2021. Rather than presenting the bag as a closed object, the design applied fine orange contour line work across the exterior depicting the bag’s imagined contents: shoe, lipstick, dust bag, pencil, coin purse. The illustration functions as an X-ray, making visible what would otherwise remain hidden. The conceptual reversal was a notable departure from standard Birkin design and positioned the In and Out as one of the most narratively interesting limited editions in recent production.
Blanc is Hermès’ cool optical white, sitting apart from warmer whites like Craie or Nata with no warm undertones to soften it. Against the orange illustration, the Blanc ground produces the sharpest contrast available across the In and Out colorway range, making the graphic content read with maximum clarity. Swift leather was selected for the program for its smooth, fine grain, which holds printed pigment with the precision the illustrative detail requires.
