This Rolex GMT-Master ref. 6542, a.k.a. “Bakelite” or “Pussy Galore”, dating to circa 1958, represents one of the most important and collectible the earliest version of all GMT references. As the original GMT-Master model, the 6542 is defined by its no crown guard case, elegant proportions, and pioneering dual-time functionality—establishing the foundation for all subsequent GMT designs by introducing a rotating (not fixed) bezel with 24 hours markings.
The watch features a beautiful gilt dial with “Officially Certified Chronometer” text, correct for the period and notably absent of the later “Superlative” designation seen on subsequent references. The dial displays rich vintage character and patina (may consider dark – chocololate overtones visible at specific lights), complemented by original luminous radium hands and the iconic red 24-hour hand. Powering the watch is the Rolex caliber 1030, paired with the desirable red and black “roulette” date wheel.
The case, serial 397,xxx with matching 1958 caseback, is fitted with a scarce period-correct riveted Oyster bracelet featuring 58 end links and a “Big Logo” signed clasp. Altogether, the watch presents with strong originality in its core components and retains the unmistakable charm of early GMT-Master production.
A defining feature of the reference—its bakelite bezel—was historically prone to damage or loss. This watch is fitted with an original bakelite bezel and insert. The insert itself is exceptionally well preserved, displaying deep vintage red and blue tones with warm, cream-colored numerals, offering outstanding visual appeal on the wrist.
