Now Live: Rolex Cosmograph Daytona Ref. 6263, 18k Yellow Gold, Black Dial

Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, Ref. 6263, 18k Yellow Gold, Black Dial 1971

Now live: a 1971 Rolex Cosmograph Daytona ref. 6263 in 18k yellow gold with a black dial. The 6263 is the final and most refined manual-wind Daytona, and in gold it carried a chronometer certificate the steel versions never received. Black dial against solid gold is the rarer, more dramatic pairing, and this one is original throughout, from dial, hands and bezel to its matching gold Oyster bracelet.

Why It Matters

The Daytona arrived in 1963 as a pump-pusher chronograph built for racing drivers, and it took Rolex most of a decade to perfect it. The 6263, introduced around 1971, is that finished version. Screw-down pushers, first tried on the short-lived 6240, became standard, and the black acrylic tachymeter bezel gave the watch the graphic face collectors now treat as the archetype.

Inside is the caliber 727, the last and fastest of the Valjoux 72-based Daytona movements, running at 21,600 vph with a 12-hour register. It powered the reference until Rolex moved the Daytona to automatic movements in 1988, which makes the 6263 the closing chapter of the manual-wind story.

Gold changes the conversation. Most gold Daytonas of the period left the factory with champagne dials, and black dial examples are far scarcer. The gold 6263 also carries “Superlative Chronometer Officially Certified” on the dial, a line absent from steel examples of the era.

This Example

This watch presents with original, unpolished case surfaces, an original black dial with even age, original hands and bezel, and a matching 18k gold Oyster bracelet correct to the reference. Case, dial and movement are signed and the numbers match. Original gold Daytonas with their bracelets intact rarely surface in this state.
